The State Library of Ohio is delighted to announce that we have received a [cid:image004.jpg at 01DD19F4.91B38980] <https://www.neh.gov/news/neh-announces-414-million-81-humanities-projects> $146,615 federal grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through its Rediscovering Our Revolutionary Tradition <https://www.neh.gov/program/rediscovering-our-revolutionary-tradition> program. This award will support the preservation, digitization, and expanded public access to the Arthur St. Clair Manuscript Collection, an important collection documenting Ohio and early American history.

The grant is one of 33 awards made nationwide through this program, which supports preservation and access to primary source materials documenting America's founding and is part of the NEH's commemoration of the nation's 250th anniversary.

State Library of Ohio Digital Initiatives Librarian Shannon Kupfer-Trausch will lead the multi-year effort to digitize approximately 4,000 pages of manuscripts documenting the life and public service of Arthur St. Clair. "Arthur St. Clair played a pivotal role during the nation's formative years," said State Librarian State Librarian Mandy Knapp. "This grant allows us to preserve these extraordinary documents while making them freely accessible to researchers, students, educators, and the public for generations to come."
Arthur St. Clair (1734-1818) served as a Major General during the American Revolution, President of the Confederation Congress, and the first Governor of the Northwest Territory. His papers document the Revolutionary War, the creation of the Northwest Territory, westward expansion, and the development of the early United States.
The two-year project, which is planned to begin in late summer, will:

  * Digitize approximately 4,000 manuscript pages.
  * Create searchable transcriptions to improve accessibility.
  * Preserve nearly 1,000 fragile documents through archival rehousing.
  * Develop a comprehensive finding aid.
  * Provide free online public access through a digital repository.
  * Partner with other institutions to connect related Arthur St. Clair materials.

Currently, much of the collection is accessible only on microfilm created in 1974. Digitization and transcription will make these important historical records searchable online while helping preserve the original documents.

The State Library will share the project through exhibits, educational resources, presentations, social media, and partnerships with libraries, museums, archives, and historical organizations.

"Grants from the National Endowment support organizations and scholars working to illuminate and educate about the great ideas and events of the past," said NEH Acting Chairman William English. "As we celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary this year, NEH is proud to help foster robust public engagement with our national history, ideals, and intellectual achievements through funding for an array of exhibitions, preservation projects, books, education initiatives, and advanced research."
