Ohio's businesses play a vital role in the economy of our state and throughout its history have contributed to innovation and the growth of communities. Products and services of Ohio's businesses impact our daily life, whether through creation of consumer goods, advancement of research and engineering, or barbershop conversations and company social gatherings. This Archives Month we're celebrating businesses with Ohio origins and photographs that depict a few of the ways they've enriched our lives individually and collectively.

1. Good Humor ice cream bars were invented and first manufactured in Youngstown, OH, by confectioner Harry B. Burt. Burt was also known for being among the first to utilize the ice cream truck as a marketing strategy.
2. Mahoning Valley Historical Society Employees at the Anthony-Thomas Candy Company prepare chocolate treats in 1988. Columbus Dispatch Collection, Columbus Metropolitan Library
3. Jerome Smucker was known as the "King of Apple Butter." Here, he samples some of his original product from the production line. J.M. Smucker Co.
4. Two employees in the Star Department of the Dayton-Wright Airplane Company reveal the graphic on the end of an aircraft wing, July 1918. Wright State University
5. This 1937 ventilation fan made by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company dissipated poisonous gases and forced fresh air into underground mines for workers to breathe. The Ohio History Connection
