Hello everyone,
The State Library of Ohio is closely following rapidly changing information on recent presidential actions and White House communications. Tuesday morning, on behalf of President Trump, the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) published a memorandum requiring a temporary pause of agency grants, loans, and other financial assistance programs. Then, later in the day, a federal judge blocked the funding freeze in response to a lawsuit by nonprofits receiving federal funds. Yesterday, the memorandum to freeze federal funds was rescinded. I am writing to you today to let you know the current status of State Library's initiatives, programs and operations.
The State Library relies heavily on federal funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Guidance from IMLS to State Libraries is to continue our operations as normal.
These essential federal funds finance initiatives such as the Summer Library Program as well as support statewide initiatives. This includes ensuring statewide access to electronic databases, coordinating the Ohio Digital Library and Guiding Ohio Online, and administering grants. The State Library is thankful to have an instrumental role in the innovative and impactful work of Ohio libraries.
It can be challenging to stay focused when receiving rapidly changing news, but I encourage you to keep up the excellent work you do every day in serving your communities. We will remain diligent in staying abreast on presidential actions and White House communications. I am cautiously optimistic about the future of federal funding support from IMLS.
