What a puzzle. When we input multiple subjects in ContentDM, we separate them with a semicolon followed by a space, just as you have it in our screenshot below, and they show up as a list of subjects on the front end in Ohio Memory (example: https://www.ohiomemory.org/digital/collection/p15005coll27/id/75733/rec/1). The only difference I can think of is that we use controlled vocabulary and you do not. Maybe because you don’t have a controlled vocabulary, ContentDM cannot distinguish your subjects as separate terms and considers them all as one subject?

Tried removing the space before the first subject (thank you for noticing that), and removing the semicolon after the second facet.

Hi Hydy,
Your subjects are typed correctly and using the semicolon is needed to separate subjects. The only things I see that might be causing your issue is the space in front of your first subject and the extra semicolon after the “technical institutes” subject. You could try deleting these and saving the item to see if that changes things. You’ll also need to index ContentDM to make sure that any changes you make are pushed through and display on the front end of Ohio Memory. ContentDM can be super picky sometimes about spacing and punctuation, especially when it comes to the subject fields.

Can you share a screenshot of what one of your items looks like on the back end (within ContentDM)? Looking at the item 1964 American Technical Education Association Certificate<https://ohiomemory.org/digital/collection/p16007coll130/id/379/rec/1>, I see what you mean about the subjects all running together. To me, it looks like an issue with how they are being input into ContentDM but I’d need to see a screenshot to confirm.

Thanks for the response.
I mean the subject facet list, some look fine. But looking at the first one specifically. (others with commas still exist, but I wanted one to work right first)

If you click into that top facet, and into one of the objects, it shows the subjects as separated by a semicolon, and yet is showing up as one facet in the subject list.

Can you show examples? I clicked on your link and the public view of the subjects of your collection appears to be fine. We separate all of our subjects with semi-colons and for places attached to subject headings, here is an example of how we format them:
Public libraries -- Ohio<https://ohiomemory.org/digital/collection/p15005coll27/search/searchterm/Public%20libraries%20--%20Ohio/field/subjec/mode/exact/conn/and>
Are you adding your subjects to your controlled vocabulary list? Then you can just copy and paste them from that box into your subject field box (and separate each with semi-colons)
I wonder if you just went in and wiped out what you have in the subject field and re-typed and re-indexed if it would do what you are wanting it to do ... ?

Hi Friends,
So, I've gotten my first set of objects up in OhioMemory<https://ohiomemory.org/digital/collection/p16007coll130> and I've run into a metadata ?formatting? problem.
My subjects are all showing up together as one subject and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I put commas between the different subjects initially (probably wrong). I tried changing to semicolons on one of the subjects, but now it just shows up in the subject facet list as a single subject with no punctuation (technical institutes college buildings) though in the objects, the semicolon appears. All on one line, with no linking in the object metadata to other subjects of the same name.
This latter and maybe also former seems to also be an issue with Place names, though I started with semicolon separation?
Any advice would be appreciated.
