Subject: Save May 5 for next Grab-a-Cup: Object Level Targets

Happy Spring everyone!

Our next Grab-a-Cup is MONDAY May 5 at 14:00 NY time.

The topic is Object Level Targets: A Measured Conversation

Including an object level target (OLT) is considered best practice for preservation imaging for many objectively good reasons. Indeed, the inclusion of an OLT in an image is commonly relied upon by end users as a visual shorthand for assessing image quality, serving as a “maker’s mark” from the imaging studio.

But are they always necessary? In this conversational Grab a Cup session, moderated by Stacey Evans and Peter Dueker, we’ll weigh the pros and cons of OLTs in heritage workflows:

  * Considerations for large and mass digitization projects: Extra pixels mean extra work, extra storage, and sustainability challenges.
  * Is it all or nothing? Selective inclusion of OLTs in digitization of similar materials.
  * Targets and project planning: Where does the target conversation start? With the curator, project manager, or the BIG BOSS?
  * The risks and challenges of including OLTs in access files for end users.

This is an open conversation, so bring your cup and your opinion and join us for what is sure to be a lively discussion.

Stacey Evans is the Imaging Specialist and Project Coordinator at the University of Virginia Library. She has thirty years of experience working in the field of photography and five in cultural heritage imaging. In 2024 she co-chaired IS&T digiTIPS and presented at the Digital Transitions Roundtable in New York City.

Peter Dueker is the Digital Imaging Manager for the Getty Research Institute (GRI) Imaging Studios in Los Angeles. He has worked in cultural heritage imaging and related disciplines for many years.

After the OTL discussion, we’ll open the floor to any other topics you’d like to bring to the table.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
