Hello Hydy,

I believe the best practice is generally to stick to the recommended
formats from the LoC, found here:
https://www.loc.gov/preservation/resources/rfs/stillimg.html
I would definitely recommend converting anything in a lossy compression
format if you are looking for archival copies, but many of those choices
will come down to what the original formats are and what the intent of the
collection is (as Amy says).

This page from the DPC's handbook might be helpful with some of those
larger questions:
https://www.dpconline.org/handbook/technical-solutions-and-tools/file-formats-and-standards

As for how to do so, we use a larger software that handles these
conversions so I don't have personal experience, but I have heard that some
librarians use ImageMagick, which I think can be used in the command line
recursively so should be fairly efficient. However, I haven't used it so I
can't vouch for it. Other options for file format migration can be found
here <https://coptr.digipres.org/index.php/File_Format_Migration>, but that
list is for more than just image files, so may be a little overwhelming
to sort through. I would also love to hear any other recommendations people
have!

Best,
Alyssa
