Hi Hydy,
This is more my opinion than a published best practice, but: I think it would depend on why they want TIFFs. If it's because they want the longer-term stability of an open image format, that might be a good reason to convert the JPEGs (or other donated formats) to TIFF. But it won't produce an increase in image quality, so if they want TIFFs for quality reasons, I'd send the donated files as is. I guess there might also be an argument in favor of sending the original formats since it truthfully reflects the work of the creator of the images—but I don't work enough on the archiving side to know whether there are any archival standards like that.
Best,
Amy

Hi OhioDIG Friends,
I asked today about how folks deal with a large amount digital photographs being donated in not exactly archival formats. Is there a best practice about leaving them in original format or changing them to TIFF? Ways to do this efficiently if so? For reference, I’m working in ContentDM as an Ohio Memory collection which prefers we scan items as TIFF files, but these were created over the last 20 years by someone else.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks so much!
