The survey, conducted in spring 2025, gathered responses from nearly 3,700 practitioners working in history museums, historic sites, historical societies, archives, and related organizations in the United States. Together, the data we’ve gathered offers a groundbreaking
look at who makes up the history workforce, how practitioners are compensated, and how they feel about their work.

<strong><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The findings are both inspiring and sobering.
</span></strong><br>
<br>
History practitioners overwhelmingly believe their work is meaningful. They are deeply committed to what they do and motivated by a strong sense of purpose. Their work leaves them feeling inspired and connected to others.
<br>
<br>
At the same time, however, many practitioners report low pay, high levels of burnout, hostile workplace cultures, and persistent barriers to advancement—especially for women, practitioners of color, and those that identify as members of the LGBTQ+ community.
<br>
<br>
Although these challenges are not new—and many are not exclusive to our field—this report provides a shared, evidence-based foundation to inform discussions about how we can work together to create a stronger, more welcoming, more sustainable field.
