of racism in the nineteenth century, with a focus on the </span>frontier and rural Midwest<span style="color:black">. Her recent book,
<em><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">The Bone and Sinew of the Land</span></em> examines the long-denied history of African American pioneers who settled the Midwest before the Civil War.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
