Thanks, Nick! This is very helpful and makes sense to me.

If anyone else has experience with this or additional ideas, please send them my way.

Thank you,
Marsha

Hi Marsha,

Quite an interesting situation! Others may have more direct experience with something like this, but my inclination is to think that it wouldn’t be permissible to apply for a federal grant from somewhere like the National Archives or NEH on behalf of an organization outside the U.S. That’s probably strictly prohibited. But the Mellon Foundation may have more flexibility around a situation like this, though I’m not sure what the precedent is for their giving money to international projects (one would think they’ve probably done that before…?). They also have fairly prescriptive areas of focus for grants, so depending on the nature of this collection there’s a chance it’d be outside their scope.

Since the archive is located in France, my thoughts are that any funding would have to come from a private foundation rather than a federal grant. In addition to Mellon, I think the Leon Levy Foundation<https://leonlevy.org/> may be another option worth looking into? Also the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation<https://www.delmas.org/>? And I of course have very little knowledge of the EU granting landscape…

A faculty member is working on a project involving a philosopher's collection at an archives in France:

I wanted to enquire about larger external grants, perhaps through the National Archives, The Mellon Foundation, or an NEH grant? Can you get grants like this to digitize work located at international archives? If so, what kind or grants might be available and how does this work? Is it possible to, for example, apply for a grant and then give the money to an archive to digitize the work of a philosopher?

I appreciate any ideas!

Thank you,

Marsha
