[An audience looks on as Ohio Humanities Executive Director Rebecca Brown Asmo, left, and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Professor of Writing and Rhetoric Jennie Young, right, participate in a conversation about Young's research on rhetorical pattern usage among dating app users at a launch party celebrating the publication of Ohio Humanities' annual magazine, Lumen, at the Kettering Foundation campus in Dayton, Ohio, in August 2025. A longtime Ohioan, Young is featured in the issue's article "Humanities at Play: 3 People to Know."]
Dear Janet,
You've heard a lot from me over the past six months about our efforts to sustain our mission of sharing stories, sparking conversations, and inspiring ideas across the state we call home. From the cancellation of our operating support grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in April, to federal funding cuts impacting local nonprofits and cultural organizations nationwide, to our continued fight to be recognized with a line item in the state budget, it's been a challenging year for Ohio Humanities and our partners in Ohio's public humanities sector.
Yet, in the face of the greatest period of uncertainty in our organization's more than 50-year history, we've accomplished some amazing things this year.
Thanks to the generosity of the Kettering Foundation, we celebrated the publication of our award-winning annual magazine, Lumen, with a launch party and panel discussion last month. This year's issue<https://ohiohumanities.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=297ea21d33322c80594bab86d&id=add8081737&e=b35026eab4> features stories centered around memory and how it shapes us, written by Ohioans including a 9-11 hero, a grieving mother, a physician working with Alzheimer's patients, and acclaimed Columbus poet, essayist, and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib.
We launched the first podcast in our Ohio Stories initiative. Co-produced by Judaism Unbound, Door to Door tells one family's story of survival during the Holocaust<https://ohiohumanities.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=297ea21d33322c80594bab86d&id=4031fcfb11&e=b35026eab4> and the ways that genocide ripples through generations and radiates through communities-even when those communities are separated by oceans.
And, in partnership with Literary Cleveland, we announced a statewide celebration of the life, literature, and legacy of Lorain native and Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison<https://ohiohumanities.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=297ea21d33322c80594bab86d&id=44e17f3a42&e=b35026eab4>, beginning in 2026.
Our work doesn't stop here. In fact, we're just getting started.
We'll have more exciting news to share soon about our plans for the future of Ohio Humanities. In the meantime, I invite you to join us on Thursday, October 9 at 11:00AM for our next advocacy webinar<https://ohiohumanities.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=297ea21d33322c80594bab86d&id=689e7accba&e=b35026eab4> featuring a conversation with our lobbyists at Van Meter, Ashbrook & Associates about navigating Ohio's 2026 Capital Budget, including tips for creating, submitting and advocating for state capital budget funds.
