Subject: EXT: Register for the Digital Commonwealth virtual conference
Registration is now open for the 19th annual Digital Commonwealth virtual conference<https://membership.digitalcommonwealth.org/Conference-2025>, which will be held on April 29, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern over Zoom. This year’s theme is “Ethics and Access: Treating Users and Collections with Care.”
Register for the conference<https://membership.digitalcommonwealth.org/event-6103297>. Registration is $10 for students and Digital Commonwealth members and people experiencing personal hardship, $25 for non-members.
Our keynote speaker is Alison Macrina, founder and executive director of the Library Freedom Project<https://libraryfreedom.org/>. We also have a great line-up of additional presenters:
* Mireille Lee will present the work of Mediterranean Antiquities Provenance Research Alliance<https://www.mapralliance.org/> (MAPRA), a collective response to the problem of poorly documented antiquities in academic collections.
* Victoria Pilato will lead a discussion exploring how web scraping for large language models (LLMs) complicates the ethical and legal dimensions of digital collection building, particularly for oral history projects.
* Eben English from Boston Public Library’s Digital Repository Services will give us an update about the Digital Commonwealth repository.
* Dan Everton will present his work analyzing samples of metadata of items that depict dead people in the Digital Commonwealth repository and other digital collections, revealing purposeful “objectivity” or distancing from the person in the collection item.
* Joy Zanghi and Lydia Beal will present on the Burnham-Nobles Digital Archive<https://crrjarchive.org/>, exploring the complexities of developing responsible access while maintaining the privacy of the victims and their descendants in the Archive, with a case study into a take-down request received in January 2024.
Join us!
Warmly, on behalf of the Digital Commonwealth Board of Directors,
Chelcie
