[Ohiodig] yearbook accessibility

Happy Thanksgiving eve! Our Technical Services employees catalog our local school yearbooks so that they appear in our online catalog, and after applying the appropriate shelf labels, the yearbooks are placed in locked cabinets in the Local & Family History section.
We require a library card (or some other form of identification) from patrons who request access to those materials, and we also make certain that patrons are examining the yearbooks within sight of the reference desk. I wish we could just place yearbooks on our open shelves so that patrons could browse freely, but when yearbooks were shelved that way, the following happened:
https://web.archive.org/web/20000919084157/http://www.thecourier.com/issues/1999/apr/040299.htm#story5<https://web.archive.org/web/20000919084157/http:/www.thecourier.com/issues/1999/apr/040299.htm#story5>
Because of defacement/vandalism issues 25 years ago, we were forced to limit access and securely store our yearbooks to protect the integrity of the collection. Since then, we have had very few instances of defacement, so the secure storage seems to work. Most patrons understand the reason behind the limited access. We also use funds budgeted for Local & Family History materials to purchase yearbooks missing from our collection (when copies are available), so that makes it even more imperative that we safeguard those rare, valuable items from vandalism and theft.
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Justin Crawfis
