This workshop on Disaster Planning for Digital Repositories delves deeply into the essentials of risk assessment and disaster planning for digital collections. Facilitated by Rebecca Frank, a researcher with expertise in risk and disaster planning for digital preservation, this session is specifically designed to arm information professionals with knowledge and practical tools needed for conducting effective risk assessments and crafting robust disaster plans. By focusing on the strategies for identifying risks and practical approaches for developing disaster plans, the workshop addresses the urgent need for preparedness in the face of uncertainty.

The workshop is structured to explore approaches for risk assessment and disaster planning via presentation, discussion, and hands-on activities. The workshop will begin with an interactive presentation and discussion about risk assessment strategies and approaches to disaster planning. After establishing a foundation and shared understanding around these topics, the workshop will transition into hands-on activities. Participants will be guided through practical exercises designed to introduce risk assessment processes and outline disaster plan content. These activities aim to cement the concepts discussed and provide attendees with actionable skills and strategies.

Emphasizing the critical importance of identifying and understanding threats and risks to digital collections, the workshop underscores a strategy for disaster preparedness that focuses on response and recovery. Attendees will leave with a heightened awareness of the vulnerabilities inherent in digital repositories and a clear set of practices for mitigating these risks. This workshop is not just an educational opportunity but a call to action for information professionals to prioritize the preservation and resilience of digital repositories.

Instructor bio:

Rebecca D. Frank, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). She is also affiliated with the Einstein Center Digital Future<https://www.digital-future.berlin/en/about-us/associated-researchers/> in Berlin, Germany. Prior to joining the faculty at UTK, she was the Einstein Center Digital Future Junior Professor for Information Management at the Berlin School of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Her research examines the social construction of risk in trustworthy digital repository audit and certification. She also conducts research in the areas of open data, digital preservation, digital curation, and data reuse, focusing on the social and ethical barriers that limit or prevent efforts to curate, preserve, and/or make data open. She has a PhD and an MSI from the University of Michigan School of Information, and a BA in Organizational Studies from the University of Michigan. Her work has been supported by the Deutsche Stiftung Friedensforschung (German Foundation for Peace Research), the Einstein Centre Digital Future, the InfraLab Berlin, the National Science Foundation (United States), and the Australian Academy of Science.

Este taller sobre planificación de desastres para repositorios digitales profundiza en los aspectos esenciales de la evaluación de riesgos y la planificación de desastres para colecciones digitales. Impartido por Rebecca Frank, investigadora experta en planificación de riesgos y desastres para la preservación digital, esta sesión se ha diseñado específicamente para dotar a los profesionales de la información de los conocimientos y las herramientas prácticas necesarios para realizar evaluaciones de riesgos eficaces y elaborar planes sólidos en caso de desastre. Al centrarse en las estrategias para identificar los riesgos y los enfoques prácticos para desarrollar planes de desastre, el taller aborda la urgente necesidad de preparación ante la incertidumbre.

El taller está estructurado para explorar enfoques de evaluación de riesgos y planificación de desastres mediante presentaciones, debates y actividades prácticas. El taller comenzará con una presentación interactiva y un debate sobre estrategias de evaluación de riesgos y enfoques de la planificación en caso de desastre. Tras establecer una base y un entendimiento común en torno a estos temas, el taller pasará a las actividades prácticas. Se guiará a los participantes a través de ejercicios prácticos diseñados para introducir los procesos de evaluación de riesgos y esbozar el contenido de los planes de desastre. El objetivo de estas actividades es consolidar los conceptos tratados y dotar a los asistentes de habilidades y estrategias prácticas.

El taller, que hace hincapié en la importancia crítica de identificar y comprender las amenazas y los riesgos para las colecciones digitales, subraya una estrategia de preparación ante desastres centrada en la respuesta y la recuperación. Los asistentes obtendrán una mayor conciencia de las vulnerabilidades inherentes a los repositorios digitales y un conjunto claro de prácticas para mitigar estos riesgos. Este taller no es solamente una oportunidad educativa, sino también una llamada a la acción para que los profesionales de la información den prioridad a la preservación y resiliencia de los repositorios digitales.

Información biográfica de la instructora:

La doctora Rebecca D. Frank es profesora adjunta en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Información de la Universidad de Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). También está afiliada al Einstein Center Digital Future de Berlín (Alemania). Antes de incorporarse al cuerpo docente de la UTK, fue Profesora Junior del Centro Einstein de Futuro Digital para Gestión de la Información en la Escuela de Biblioteconomía y Documentación de la Universidad Humboldt de Berlín. Su investigación examina la construcción social del riesgo en la auditoría y certificación de repositorios digitales fiables. También investiga en los ámbitos de los datos abiertos, la preservación digital, la conservación digital y la reutilización de datos, centrándose en las barreras sociales y éticas que limitan o impiden los esfuerzos por conservar, preservar o abrir los datos. Tiene un doctorado y un MSI por la Escuela de Información de la Universidad de Michigan, y un bachillerato en Estudios Organizativos por la Universidad de Michigan.
