Subject: EXT: Next Week: Webinars on Historical Data Set Reconstruction, and Indigenizing SNAC
Dear Colleagues:
I’m writing to share details about two upcoming virtual events that may be of interest to this community. Please share widely. We hope to see you there!
Visualizing History’s Fragments with the Ottoman Algerian Registers<https://elaboratories.org/event/visualizing-historys-fragments-with-the-ottoman-algerian-registers/>
Presented by Dr. Ashley Sanders
Date: Dec. 10 at 11:00 AM EST (Rescheduled from Oct. 29)
Cost: Free
Registration Link<https://elaboratories.org/event/visualizing-historys-fragments-with-the-ottoman-algerian-registers/>
The few extant fragments of knowledge from Algeria’s Regency period emerge from French and Algerian chronicles of the governors, travel narratives, diplomatic correspondence, a few surviving Ottoman registers, and commercial records from the French coral concessions. But through close reading, structured notes, and developing a custom, context-specific classification schema, Dr. Ashley Sandershas reconstructed data sets on the governors of Ottoman Algeria (1518-1837) for prosopographical study. This reconstruction aims to avoid recreating imperial ontologies and instead aims to describe these men and women with categories that they themselves would have likely employed.
Join eLaboratories on Dec. 10 at 11:00 AM (EST) to learn more about Dr. Sanders’ strategies for recovering details about the lives of the countless men and women mentioned in these documentary fragments. In this presentation, Dr. Sanders will show how historical data set (re)construction is one way we can begin to address voids in the archive and use the records of the colonizers to do reparative work.
SNAC for Indigenous Archival Research: Finding Records and Improving Representation<https://elaboratories.org/event/snac-for-indigenous-archival-research-finding-records-and-improving-representation/>

On Dec. 12 at 4:00 PM (EST), Ia Bull, Diana Marsh, Jerry Simmons and Melissa Stoner will discuss how you can use SNAC for archival research. During the webinar, they will introduce the SNAC web portal, describe archival authority control, explore SNAC’s authority records, and demonstrate how to navigate SNAC records to discover contextual relations between archival creators and their collections as well as the relations between organizations, persons and families.
They will also introduce their work in centering Indigenous representation in the SNAC platform and will describe opportunities and challenges to Indigenous archival search.
This workshop is ideal for individuals interested in learning how to use SNAC for archival research as well as learning about approaches to doing Indigenous archival search.
Sincerely,
Katie Blizzard (she/her/hers)
