Many of us have items/records in our collections that predate today's deed of gift/documentation standards. Understanding abandoned property concepts can help with decision making.

This program of the Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts is provided with generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, with additional support from the William Penn Foundation and Independence Foundation.
Just because you don't have a law degree doesn't mean you can't successfully navigate abandoned property law. Sarah Kapellusch, Registrar at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and an instructor on legal topics for the Northern States Conservation Center breaks it down for you-what is abandoned property, when is something abandoned, how to identify your own abandoned property, and what to do with it once it's been identified as such.
This course addresses Goal #3-expanding access to education, professional development, and leadership opportunities-of the Education, Professional Development, and Leadership section of the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation's 2023 Held in Trust report.
About our Speaker:
Sarah Kapellusch, Instructor, Northern States Conservation Center
Sarah Kapellusch is an instructor for the Northern States Conservation Center's Museum Classes Online where she teaches Legal Issues in Collections Management, Collection Management Databases, and Found in the Collections: Orphans, Old Loans, and Abandoned Property. She is also the Registrar at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum where she is responsible for the administrative oversight of the historical collections. She is a past President of the Wisconsin Federation of Museums and has served on the AASLH Nomenclature Task Force where she was an editor on Nomenclature 4.0 for Museum Cataloging.
