DESCRIPTION
The Public Library Archives and Special Collection (PLASC) will be meeting on June 29, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM (CST) [4:00 PM to 5:30 PM EST]. The meeting will begin with updates from PLASC Steering Committee members about our work over the past year. The PLASC Section will also be announcing a new online microsite resource featuring easy-access examples of newspaper digitization projects and programs around the country.
The section's speakers program will address issues relating to the stewardship of local newspapers at public libraries. Issues include copyright, the role of microfilm, digitization projects, preservation best practices, and the move to online-only newspapers. The goal of the program is to provide support on a variety of issues facing management of historic newspaper collections for public library archivists, and offer solutions or ideas that you might be able to use at your home institutions.
SPEAKERS
The section meeting program's speakers will include:
Justin Clark, Digital Initiatives Director at the Indiana State Library: Clark is in charge of the state of Indiana's Indiana Memory is a collaborative effort to provide access to the wealth of primary sources in Indiana libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural institutions. It is a gateway to Indiana's history and culture found in digitized books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, maps, and other media.provides consultant and advisory services for the digitization projects of libraries in Indiana.
Lisa Gregory, North Carolina Digital Heritage Center Program Director: Gregory serves as the Program Coordinator of the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center, which operates the DigitalNC website. NCDHC is a statewide digitization and digital publishing organization housed at UNC's Wilson Special Collections Library. They work with North Carolina cultural heritage organizations to scan, describe, and publish historical materials online, increasing access to and use of their collections. The program has found tremendous success and outreach through its digitization of local community newspapers in North Carolina.
Tahe Zalah, Northeast Document Conservation Center Outreach Conservator: As NEDCC's Outreach Conservator, Zalah travels around the United States visiting institutions and giving on-the-spot advice on collections, including specific items of concern or planning for the preservation of whole collections. Zalah specializes in conservation of works of fine art on paper, rare manuscripts, archival documents, maps, and objects on vellum.
