Subject: [ARLIS-L] You're Invited: SEI 2023 Keynote

Dear ARLIS/NA members,

You are invited to attend the SEI 2023 keynote address presented by Elvia Arroyo-Ramírez.

The Summer Educational Institute (SEI)<http://vra.memberclicks.net/message2/link/d58a74a5-bfff-4a57-83bd-a7ecf1d54f5a/1> is a joint project of the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual Resources Association (VRA). The SEI curriculum presents an overview of the digital life cycle taught by experts in the field. We are pleased to announce that this year’s virtual SEI keynote address will be free and open to all, and we extend a special invitation to ARLIS/NA and VRA members.

2023 SEI Keynote: “Our collective survival: Radicalizing care work in digital stewardship”

When: Tuesday, June 13, 2023, from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. EDT
Where: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0IrMqYvOTc<http://vra.memberclicks.net/message2/link/d58a74a5-bfff-4a57-83bd-a7ecf1d54f5a/2>

About: As technical practices for digital preservation and curation reach operational maturity at cultural heritage institutions, discussion about care work seems to be at its nascent stages. From the systems archivists use to capture content for long-term preservation, to the ways we provide access to digitized and born-digital materials, digital curation practices when left unchecked can replicate the same harms witnessed in the physical realm. What makes care radical and how can we enact it in the realm of institutional digital stewardship? In her keynote address, Elvia Arroyo-Ramírez will share privacy, labor, and technological considerations and practical approaches to digital collection building grounded in care work.

Elvia Arroyo-Ramírez (she/her) is the Digital Archivist for University Archives at UC Irvine. She holds a BA from UCLA and an MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh. She is the co-editor of the special issue on “Radical Empathy in Archival Practice” in the Journal for Critical Library and Information Studies (JCLIS). Her practice and scholarship are grounded in a feminist ethic of care and works to expose and repair archival practices rooted in systemic biases that perpetuate harm to BIPOC and other marginalized communities.

We hope you join us on June 13, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. EDT for Elvia Arroyo-Ramírez’s presentation on radicalizing care work in digital stewardship. If you have any questions, please feel free to email the SEI implementation team at seiworkshop.contact at gmail.com<http://vra.memberclicks.net/message2/link/d58a74a5-bfff-4a57-83bd-a7ecf1d54f5a/3>.
