Internship description (type of work/possible projects). In other words, how the student will spend their internship hours?
The Ohio State University Libraries seeks a detail oriented and organized MLIS or MI student to work as a Metadata Intern for 15 hours per week during the Spring 2022 semester. The position pays $14.17 per hour and lasts for 15 weeks. This grant-funded internship involves metadata remediation and augmentation on a collection(s) in Digital Collections (DC, https://library.osu.edu/dc/), OSU's platform for digitized and born-digital special collections and archival resources. Under the management of the Metadata Initiatives Librarian, the intern will improve metadata records. This may include identifying missing and incorrect metadata in the digitized collection(s) by accessing the original, physical materials on site. The intern will correct metadata in spreadsheets and have weekly meetings with the Metadata Initiatives Librarian to coordinate on updating the metadata in DC on a rolling basis. Depending on time-constraints and the size of the collection(s), the intern may provide subject analysis on a series or sub-series level. As a result of this project, the improved collection(s) will be shared with the Ohio Digital Network (https://ohiodigitalnetwork.org/) for harvesting by the Digital Public Library of America (https://dp.la/). Course credit can be arranged.
Preferred skills, competencies and knowledge of student. (Internship site can recommend that certain classes or should be completed prior to internship or that certain skills will are desired)
Coursework in metadata, cataloging, or archives is required for understanding core concepts in this work. Proficiency with Excel spreadsheets is required. Experience with other data manipulation tools, e.g. OpenRefine, is preferred.
Projected schedule (number of hours a week) or if necessary the range of dates intern is needed - knowing that this is negotiable
The intern works 15 hours per week for 15 weeks during the Spring 2022 semester (January to April). While on-site work is needed, hybrid work options are available.
