Job Title: Digital Collections Management Librarian

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applications and nominations for the position of Digital Collections Management Librarian. This 12-month tenure-track faculty position reports to the Judith O. Sieg Chair for Preservation and Head of the Preservation, Conservation & Digitization Department and will coordinate, oversee and manage Digital Collections activities throughout the libraries at Penn State. The successful candidate is expected to work in a highly collaborative organization to create and implement effective and efficient practices in collection management, preservation assessment, digitization, description and metadata, copyright and privacy review, collection loading, and outreach and marketing.

The Digital Collections Management Librarian will provide leadership in coordinating digital collection building, repository management and oversight of digital collections within multiple concurrent digitization streams. This will include negotiating priorities and coordinating with faculty and staff throughout the Libraries to ensure timely and effective online access to collections. The position will coordinate and develop practices, polices, and workflows for the lifecycle and ongoing preservation of digital collections, including legacy digital content. This position is also charged with coordinating migration processes to ensure all collections are migrated with quality assurances.

The Digital Collections Management Librarian will work closely with the Digital Collection Librarian who serves as product owner for cultural heritage repositories as the primary stakeholder for repository curation and management features. The DCML will develop workflows and specifications for in-house and vended digitization work and will make recommendations for selecting vendors, and act on behalf of the Libraries as the technical liaison to vendors providing digital products, when digitization is to be outsourced. In addition, the Digital Collections Management Librarian will oversee and supervise the Digital Production team consisting of the digital production supervisor and three full-time and two part-time staff. Moreover, this position will collaborate closely with colleagues in the Preservation, Conservation & Digitization Department and stakeholders throughout the University Libraries including Cataloging and Metadata Services, Research Informatics and Publishing Department, Libraries Strategic Technologies, Scholarly Communications and Copyright, and subject, branch and campus libraries and centers on all Penn State campuses (24).

Qualifications:
This position requires a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent); demonstrated experience in managing a digital collection repository, such as CONTENTdm; knowledge of cultural heritage digitization and familiarity with standards and best practices in a variety of formats (image, audio, video, object, text); knowledge of metadata standards, such as Dublin Core; basic knowledge of copyright and fair use as it relates to digitization; demonstrated project management experience; ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical faculty and staff, and the ability to translate user needs into technical requirements; demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and implement digital collection projects; demonstrated ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, collaboration, and cooperation are essential; strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion; ability to meet the requirements of promotion and tenure; excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills; and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred qualifications include experience with creating and/or using scripts for batch creating, editing, and loading objects; knowledge of and familiarity with 3D and GIS data; familiarity with repository solutions such as Samvera; familiarity with digital preservation issues; experience with APIs for cultural heritage repositories, such as the International Image Interoperability Framework; familiarity with promotion and tenure practices in a research library.
