[A person in glasses looking at the camera  Description automatically generated]The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce the State Board of Education of Ohio recently appointed Janet Carleton to the State Library Board. Janet has 24 years of library experience, including more than 20 years at Ohio University Libraries, and extensive knowledge of librarianship in special collections and digitization. Since 2005, Janet has been the Digital Initiatives Coordinator for Ohio University Libraries, where she is responsible for digitization, digital preservation, and social media promotion of the Libraries' unique resources. Her career at Ohio University Libraries began in 1998 at the Mahn Center for Archives & Special Collections as a Scripps Project Reformatting Archivist and continued in 2000 as Digital Projects Librarian.

Janet is an active member of state, regional, and national library, preservation, archives, and digitization associations, boards, task forces, commissions, and user's groups. Her professional leadership includes chair or co-chair of committees for Society of American Archivists, Midwest Archives Conference, Society of Ohio Archivists, and Academic Library Association of Ohio, and chair of the Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board. In addition to her active memberships, Janet's demonstrated professional service and steadfast involvement, advocacy, and commitment to libraries, access to resources, digitization, and preservation includes published scholarly articles and state and national conference and workshop presentations too numerous to list. Janet brings to the Board familiarity and involvement with numerous organizations that partner with the State Library, a background in academic libraries and an OhioLINK member library, southeastern Ohio representation, and a breadth of experience and knowledge in digitization and preservation projects in Ohio. She served as advisor to the Ohio Connecting to Collections grant project in Ohio, steering committee member and governance cochair for the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) Planning Grant for Ohio project, member of the Ohio Digital Network outreach committee, and Ohio Digitization Interest Group planning group.

Janet is regarded by her colleagues at Ohio University as an expert on its history as well as the history of southeastern Ohio in general. She is known for her profound appreciation for history and its artifacts. Janet was sworn in by State Librarian Beverly Cain in the presence of Notary Public Tracy Grimm on January 7, 2019.

"I am honored to join the State Library of Ohio Board," expressed Janet. "I look forward to working with my colleagues at the State Library and around the state to continue to enhance Ohio libraries as they work to meet the needs of their communities. As a third-generation librarian/archivist I am eager to pitch in!"

Prior to her work at Ohio University, Janet was an Electronic Records Archivist and then Archivist III/webmaster at the State Archives, Ohio History Connection. She holds a Post-Master's Certificate in the Curation and Management of Digital Assets from the University of Maryland and Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin. Janet earned a Bachelor of Arts in History, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art History from Ohio University.

The State Library of Ohio is governed by a five-member board whose members are appointed to five-year terms or to complete an unexpired term, by the State Board of Education. Under the Ohio Revised Code, section 3375.01, members of the Board cannot be recent members of the State Board of Education and cannot serve on the Board of Trustees of any other library while on the State Library Board.  When a position becomes available on the Board, the State Library Board sends out a call for nominations to the Ohio Library Community and then forwards two recommendations to the State Board of Education for their consideration.
