Presentation: Digital Preservation: NDSA Levels Revision and Documentation
Panelists:
- Dan Noonan, associate professor and digital preservation librarian at The Ohio State University, on "Evolution of Technological Guidelines: NDSA's Levels of Digital Preservation Revision."
Abstract: The Levels of Digital Preservation<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fndsa.org%2Fpublications%2Flevels-of-digital-preservation%2F&data=02%7C01%7Ccarleton%40ohio.edu%7C7c6ad10ed1494fabdc7008d8484e318d%7Cf3308007477c4a70888934611817c55a%7C0%7C0%7C637338847969852763&sdata=N3UYIXLj1sw5lFr6%2FyZUvyb39q48ptiP7GpvWmgewvM%3D&reserved=0>, minted by the NDSA in 2013, were revised and re-released in October of 2019. The revision included an updated Matrix, an Implementation Guide, and an Assessment Tool template. This session will walk through the updated process, explain the revisions to the Matrix, describe the use of the Assessment Tool, which can be used to assess an entire program or the specific needs of a collection or stream of digital content. In addition, the work of two currently active subgroups of Levels of Digital Preservation working group will be discussed including finalizing a Curatorial Layer to be used with the Levels as well as the work around Teaching and Advocacy. Opportunities for discussion about and feedback on the project will also be provided.
- Matt McShane, former intern, The Ohio State University Libraries/recent MLIS graduate, Kent State, on "Digital Preservation Documentation: An External Perspective."
Abstract: In 2019, The Ohio State University Libraries began to map out its digital preservation environment. One component of that was to review the existing digital preservation policy and other documentation that informs or impacts those efforts. At the beginning of 2020, the digital preservation librarian, employed an intern to assist with this review, among other duties. This allowed for an external and less insular perspective. The review led to examining digital preservation documentation of other institutions within the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), identifying convergences and gaps, to help inform an update to Ohio State's digital preservation policy framework. McShane will discuss the findings of his analysis of the digital preservation policy documentation of the BTAA institutions.
