The ScanDIVA by Konica Minolta with its free downloadable software, ImageDIVA Touch, will scan up to 300 DPI and 18x24. There is a separate software, Locator Rapide, available that will scan 600 DPI for items up to 11x17 and 400 DPI for the full 18x24 scanning bed. We received a quote of $400 for this software through Tronitech, with whom we have a service contract on the scanner.

The scanner has the adjustable bed for resting a book spine, however the model we have does not have the optional glass to pull down and hold the pages down. This can be purchased separately and added to the equipment.


We are detecting some distortions in the scans that replacing the bulbs did not fix. The distortion creates four distinct quadrants along the center vertical and center horizontal lines of the scanning bed with different shades, reddish in tone in different quadrants (see attached scans). By running adjustments provided in the free software we were able to reduce the impact of the shadows, but not eliminate them (see difference between test scans 1 and 2). Also, depending on what is being scanned the shadowing is less or more noticeable (see test scan 3).


Due to the limitations of this equipment and the need for 600 DPI minimum scans for digital collection purposes we do not recommend it as, and are going in another direction ourselves for, equipment for digital collections. However, this scanner, despite its limitations, may be of use for a makerspace or other patron use setting for scanning of books, documents, and other materials for personal research use as opposed to use of a copy machine. Unfortunately due to limited space in our Local History & Genealogy room we are unable to make use of this equipment. It requires a table space of, at minimum, 30x30 inches for the scanner alone not including a computer to operate it.


For these reasons, we are offering this equipment for $1,000 (original purchase price $23,000 in 2013) or best offer to an institution willing to pick-up in Massillon.
