[Ohiodig] Internet Archive Discussion Point

Hi John,
Like Oberlin College’s Library, we scan using a Table Top Scribe and pay Internet Archive to handle all post-processing through the Gold Package service. For the occasional rare and/or fragile book, we do the digitization on a copy stand instead, do the post-processing and conversion ourselves, and upload a completed PDF, instead of going through the Gold Package routine. But the majority of our books are done on the Scribe.
I like their user-friendly online presentation, and the fact that people can download texts in several different formats (PDF, ePUB, etc). Some people question IA’s commitment to long-term preservation, though IA has said they care about this, and they host their digital content on redundant servers in diverse geographic locations to protect against data loss.

We have been scanning in-house using a Table Top Scribe<https://archive.org/details/tabletopscribesystem> and paying for the "gold package" processing service.

Definitely. We have our publications on IA. We did also work with IA to get them digitized as well. We haven’t uploaded anything ourselves yet. https://archive.org/details/toledomuseumofart

Hello OhioDIG,
It was great to see many of you yesterday and thank you again to Angela and Aaron for their presentation; the work CML is doing is very exciting!
If you are advising a small institution that would like to start making digital assets available online with a limited or nonexistent budget, would you ever advise them to start by uploading their content to the Internet Archive as an access and preservation solution? I’m curious about people’s opinions here.
Thanks!
John
