[Ohiodig] Internet Archive Discussion Point

Hi John,
We've been using the Internet Archive since we started our digitization program. I digitize everything in-house and upload them to our page: https://archive.org/details/@the_cleveland_museum_of_art
We've got both library and archival materials uploaded and have them organized in separate collections (https://archive.org/details/@the_cleveland_museum_of_art&tab=collections). We decided to go with the Internet Archive since it was free, easy to use from our end, and easy to find and use by our patrons. We upload reduced-size PDFs, so it's not so much of a preservation plan for us, but we believe it provides much greater access than what we could achieve going through our IT department to create something on our own website (and much quicker/less hassle), or using a subscription service. Internet Archive also provides the page-turner view for you, and you can enter a lot of metadata if you so wish. I upload an XML file of our metadata (exported from our library catalog) and it populates that metadata onto the digitized item's page automatically.
So far we've had a great experience with Internet Archive. You may not be able to do all the flashy, fancy things a hosted site offers, but for a small (or large) institution that wants to get their materials out there for just the cost of employee time, it's a tremendous option.
If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them if I can!

Hello OhioDIG,
It was great to see many of you yesterday and thank you again to Angela and Aaron for their presentation; the work CML is doing is very exciting!
If you are advising a small institution that would like to start making digital assets available online with a limited or nonexistent budget, would you ever advise them to start by uploading their content to the Internet Archive as an access and preservation solution? I'm curious about people's opinions here.
Thanks!
John
